The client approached Lignutech with a major challenge related to their existing business. The plastic materials they have used for decades faced becoming obsolete as new European regulations would ban the use of plastics in the single use application market they operate in. Lignutech was tasked with identifying and developing an alternative material based on renewable forest derived cellulose which would be both renewable and recyclable with existing cardboard products. A review of their existing business, product offering and impending regulations was initially carried out to determine the market, technical and economic requirements of the future solution. Alternative material and technologies where identified and a subsequent R&D project led to the development of a novel material and process technology. This technology is now being incorporated within a new business venture in Finland with investment in a pilot scale production and the new product being launched to the market during 2021.
